Ha Long Bay, The pride of Vietnam.

Ha Long Bay is one of the great natural wonders of Asia. It is the only most popular side voyage from Hanoi. The loveliness of the bay and its 3000 islands is so tremendous that a digression there should be considered an necessary part of any trip to Northern Vietnam. A one or two day tour also makes a wonderful and inexpensive dreamy getaway if you meet someone extraordinary.

After five hours on a hellish road (which is gradually being repaved), you will be satisfied with some of the most amazing and memorable sightseeing of your trip. Hire a boat in Ha Long City or Hong Gai to take you as far from beach as possible, and simply wander among the islands, fjords and inlets. There is prosperity to investigate in the 4000 square kilometer body of water, and it is easy to find quiet places to swim, fish, or just relax without seeing another soul, yet surrounded by grandiose scenery.

Despite what geologists may declare, the bay was essentially created when an enormous dragon plunged to Earth here before recorded history. Its mighty tail imprinted the great stone ocean floor aggressively before the creature flew away to the place where legends are born. This tale does not seem so far fetched as you cruise among thousands of marble outcroppings, which look like so many blades plunge deep into the mist from below the sea. Many are infertile, battered and rocky. Others are cloaked in vegetation so impenetrable that it is impossible to see the rock beneath. At dusk, they all take on inexplicable shades of dreary, mauve and olive. Several of the larger islands have general caves, which are open to guests for about a dollar. Although they are poorly lit and have smooth pathways, they offer a little voyage to liven up a long, lazy day of boating.

The water is hot, fresh and clear, so swimming is always a pleasure here. Be arranged with swimwear and a towel. On most boats it is essential for you to bring your own beverages, even though the gang may cook your lunch aboard.
