The Empty Quarter is the expansive desert in the southeastern center of the Arabian Peninsula, the principal incessant body of sand in the world. It's alluring to identify the Empty Quarter "no man's land", but that's not fairly accurate. Nomads do in fact populate parts of the Quarter at different times of year. And the region is spoken for the central borders of Saudi Arabia,United Arab Emirates, Oman, and Yemen are in here... someplace. It's just that no one has concerned to really draw those lines in the sand.
In the UAE, the very northern boundary of the Empty Quarter, is nearby from the Liwa Oasis, a 200 km drive from Abu Dhabi on outstanding highways. The larger road, to Huwayiah, is wrinkled with green date palms, and the other road (closer to Abu Dhabi), to Al Hamai'm, now has them rising as well -- nice for Emiratis looking to visit an oasis, but overcrowding the sight of the desert for foreigners. From Saudi Arabia, present rumours have it that journey is not allowable by the government.
A 4WD vehicle, or rather, a convoy of them is the only rational alternative for entering the supple sands of the desert. If you aren't a confident, knowledgeable, well-equipped sand dune desert driver, Wikitravel cannot arrange you for something like the Empty Quarter. On cemented roads, in the UAE, a road passes during the oasis towns, and a drive is probable to Tal Mireb, the tallest bank in the country, which gives a few minutes of perspective on how huge and unreceptive this place is.
As with all deserts, bring lots of water, make sure that your vehicle can grip the desert sands and be sure that you have a dependable means of divining route (such as a GPS). Also, bring a dependable means of announcement in case of trouble.
