Cocos Island COSTA RICA - North and Central America


Cocos Island, 'a verdant bunch in the center of the ocean' as it has been called, is situated 496 km from Cabo Blanco on the Pacific shore of Costa Rica between 5º 30' 26" and 5º 30' 06" freedom north and between 87º 05' 46" and 87º 01' 47" longitud west.It is a volcanic structure that lies 3,000 m from the submarine ridge notorious as the asismic crest of El Coco, a chain of underwater volcanoes that extends from the Galapagos Islands to the mid American ditch off Burica-Quepos peak. It was discovered by the Spanish navigator Joan Cabezas around 1526, and in 1556 it previously appeared on Desliens's map under the name Ile de Coquess. 

It first became well-known thanks to the three resources concealed there by Willan Davies, Benito 'Bloody Sword' Bonito and Willam Thompson beween 1684 and 1821. The so called treasure of Lima, which Thomson hid, is the most precious of all because it includes a life size image of the Virging and Child in unpolluted gold.The island's scenery is abrupt due to its new configuration and the strong influence created by the deep waters neighboring it. This issue and the roughly 7,000 mm of yearly precipitation give increase to favorable situation for many waterfalls, some of which fall spectacularly into the sea. There is almost enduring cloud, especially at the very top on Iglesias Hill 636m. 

It is covered in evergreen woodland in which 175 species of vascular vegetation have been recorded. These include 68 ferns and connected plants, 85 higher fungi, 25 mosses and 27 liverworts. The most abundant tree species are copey, the palm Euterpe precatoria, the guarumo and the iron wood hierarchy, the last two being endemics.97 sort of birds have been recorded, including three endemic inhabitants: the Cocos Island cuckoo, Cocs IIsland flycatcher and Cocos islet finch. Two widespread reptiles , the lizard and the gecko , three species of spiders, 57 crustaceans, 518 marine molluscs and 450 insects and arthropods have been proved.

The coral reefs surrounding the island comprise 18 species of coral with the most numerous. Over 300 species of angle exist in the calm blue waters: enormous hammerhead sharks and white-tipped swindlers are very frequent and whale sharks, the chief cast a line in the world, have also been seen.

Right of entry to the island is by sea; from Puntarenas the flight takes approximately 36 hours to Wafer Bay and Chatham Bay where are good quality anchoring conditions. There is no housing in the park, simply facilities for the staff. It is likely to take long walks, go mountaineering, headlong and boating. A boat trip approximately the island enables guests to admire the countless waterfalls. Boats can be employed in Puntarenas to create the trip.
